Ayala Katz
Ayala Katz has worked tirelessly to promote LGBT equality in Israel. Her life was torn apart on August 1, 2009, when her son Nir was one of two young people murdered in a shooting at the Bar Noar, a Tel Aviv center for LGBT youth, where he volunteered as a counselor. Katz responded to her incalculable loss by becoming a vocal activist in Israel’s LGBT rights movement. Without fear of repercussions, she gave interviews and spoke at rallies, conferences, and schools. In addition, she worked with LGBT organizations to create the Nir Katz Center for Violence, Discrimination and Homophobia Reporting, which opened in Tel Aviv in 2012. She chaired Tehila, an Israeli support organization for parents of LGBT children. In 2010, she organized a meeting between Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s Minister of Education, and LGBT groups—the first such meeting of its kind in Israel. Katz was named one of the 50 most influential people in Israel by Haaretz.
Jennifer Gorovitz
During her tenure as the first woman CEO among the 20 largest Jewish federations in America, Gorovitz championed outreach and inclusion for all Jews in the Bay Area who felt excluded from Jewish life. Her leadership on LGBT issues set a national example for Jewish leaders across the country. She was a strong advocate for inclusion in synagogues and schools and stressed the importance of staff training to eliminate prejudice and prevent bullying of LGBT teens. Recognizing the importance of long-term financial support for LGBT inclusion, Jennifer also led the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund to make the largest LGBT-focused gift by any Jewish federation.
Martin Tannenbaum
We honor Martin Tannenbaum for his inspiring leadership and service to Keshet and to the Jewish communities of the Bay Area, Salt Lake City, and beyond. He has been a member of the Keshet board since 2010 and served as Keshet’s 2011-2013 Board Chair. For the past 35 years, Martin has helped nonprofit and for-profit organizations learn, grow, and innovate. He has held top positions at Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and The Idea Factory and has consulted with premier nonprofits including Jewish Family and Children’s Services, the Boston Community Foundation, and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology. Tannenbaum also serves on the board of Congregation Sha’ar Zahav and has served as a board member and treasurer for Rhoda Goldman Plaza and Menorah Park. He received a B.A., magna cum laude, in Psychology and English from Harvard University, and an M.B.A., with honors, from Boston University.
