The Struggle for the Soul of Israel: The Challenges to Israel’s Democracy

A talk with Avrum Burg, political leader, author, and activist.

Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and, at the same time, it faces significant challenges.

Non-Orthodox Jews do not have the right to marry with their chosen rabbis. Palestinian Israeli citizens — 20% of the population — do not feel fully accepted and equal. In the territories, Palestinians and Jews are governed by different sets of laws.

What needs to be done for Israel to truly be a democratic homeland for the Jewish people? And what is the role of the Diaspora in this historic endeavor?
