Read the top 10 reasons our community is one of the most innovative Page 6 Dear friends Since I began my tenure as CEO of the Federation in May 2015 I am happy to report positive movement and growth. First off it must be said that we live in a magnificent Jewish community. The creative expression of Jewish life here is unparalleled and the galaxy of agencies and synagogues not to mention the leaders of those institutions is very bright. Any Federation is only as good as the extent to which it supports collaborates with responds to and grows in sync with its community. Our Federation has been critically important in shaping this community over the past century. And for the last 20 years weve been gradually adapting to our community as it evolves. Today the philanthropic environment has greatly changed. Traditional sources of revenue are diminishing numerous organizations independently and ably serve our Jewish community and donors and philanthropists are seeking new ways to make a difference. Federation Forward our new strategic approach is the first step in creating a road map to achieve the greatest possible impact within our Bay Area Jewish community. To make it happen we will collaborate with our agency and synagogue partners donors and community leaders with the common vision of a flourishing Jewish community imbued with the richness of Jewish tradition. Our new central focus will be doubling Jewish engagement within 10 years both in numbers and depth by working with our partners to expand opportunities to access Jewish life and learning. We will continue to create impact locally and globally by caring for the vulnerable inspiring Jewish life and learning and strengthening Israeli society. We believe that there is inherent and deep value to Jewish life. We strive for a creative diverse welcoming and active Jewish community with thriving institutions cultural and spiritual entrepreneurs and many ways to access Jewish life and community. We seek to inspire meaningful Jewish engagement within our community and to welcome people of all backgrounds to the richness of Jewish life. We have no judgements or preconceived notions about how or where people should find their Jewish connections. Key to this effort will be the undertaking of a major new Community Study. Were developing a cutting-edge approach that extends beyond demographic measurements and also assesses attitudes and aspirations about Jewish life designed to inform the work of our community for years to come. As we move forward with our work the most important thing is that we do so strategically and in partnership with our community. Thank you for being a critical part of our Jewish community. Berkeley Hillel trip early on in her freshman year and was able to go during winter break. Because of a deep and transformative experience Erin returned to Cal with a tightknit group of Jewish friends and felt comfortable enough to jump right in and become a student leader. Instead of the trip turning into a memory of an exotic vacation it became an extension of my current world. Every time I see someone from the trip I remember Israel and our shared experiences there as a group of Jewish students. Student scholarships that benefit the entire family We are not a religious family do not belong to a temple nor did we participate in the Bay Area Jewish community in any way before our son began school noted Susan a local writer. So Brandeis day school became our connection to other Jews it was where our children learned about their history where we celebrated holidays. Because of Brandeis our son wanted a bar mitzvah as will our daughter and certainly because of Brandeis both of my children have an awareness of themselves as Jews. Everyone deserves a fair chance to participate When Miles was born with a rare neuromuscular condition doctors said his horizons would be limited. That never stopped his family. Theyve overcome many obstacles making sure Miles enjoys the same activities growing up as his twin brother Jeffrey but they faced an unexpected hurdle in getting Miles integrated into the Jewish community. Judaism has always said we take care of our people his mom says. Everyone deserves a fair chance to participate. INCLUDE is a pioneering partnership between Jewish LearningWorks and the Federation designed to create awareness in the Jewish community educate teachers and help programs become more inclusive for kids with learning differences or physical or emotional challenges. Local teenagers making a difference in the lives of people halfway around the world In some ways Andrew is like other 16-year-olds spending time at school studying or hanging out with friends. But dig deeper and youll discover that through the Jewish Teen Foundations Andrew raised 10575 for families in Africa and Israel to help them gain access to clean drinking water and irrigation for crops. Not many teens think about issues like global water sustainability let alone raise dollars to fund projects abroad. After getting a chance to meet other Jewish teenagers from around the world I feel a lot more connected to my Judaism said Andrew. And now Im looking for other ways to stay involved. The Bay Area Jewish Community What makes our Federation dierent FEDERATION FIRSTS Our community was the first to have an LGBT Alliance designed to grow sustain and inspire the large and diverse LGBT Jewish community of the Bay Area. Our Jewish Teen Foundations are a successful model of engaging teens in philanthropic social action. We were the first to have an on-the-ground office in Israel strengthening the connection between Jewish communities in Israel and the Bay Area. Our pioneering Gvanim program promotes Israels democracy by creating a cadre of leaders to spread the message of Jewish pluralism to ever-widening circles of Israelis. We were the first large city Federation to have a woman CEO Jen Gorovitz guiding our organization to new heights and marking many accomplishments during her tenure. Our Israel Giving Circle engages new donors in meaningful and targeted philanthropy in support of Israel. Our Early Childhood Education Conference for Jewish educators convened teachers and experts in their field to deepen their knowledge of active outdoor and indoor learning. This new Jewish overnight camp hosts 150 campers during the summer in an ocean-front facility at the Monterey Bay Academy and offers a one-week special needs session and specialty tracks in ocean exploration performing arts and adventure sports. The community has reach from Bulgaria to Bolivia. We fund a program where Jewish volunteer medical professionals provide free eye examinations to underprivileged children throughout Bulgaria through a cooperative venture between the Federation-supported American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Alexandrovska University Hospital. Teens can access transformative experiences. In 13 years the Federations Jewish Teen Foundations have raised 1.8 million through 710 participants making 274 grants to nonprofit organizations that do everything from providing safe drinking water in Africa to helping at-risk youth in Israel. Locally our Teen Engagement Initiative will significantly increase engagement opportunities in Jewish education and communal life for teens in our region. In Hungary a lifeline for a struggling single mother Aniko was at the end of her rope. A single mother with medical challenges Aniko was raising a son and daughter in a crumbling apartment under constant threat of eviction. Thats when she contacted the Jaffe Jewish Family Service in Budapest one of JDCs central welfare agencies in the Hungarian capital. I was surprised the Jewish community had a program like this but it was a very good surprise said Aniko 49 who is on disability for colitis and diabetes and gets occasional work cleaning houses. The help we got changed our lives. Finding solace at the Bay Area Healing Center Mark attended a work event where he heard Rabbi Weiss the executive director of the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center speak about saying goodbye to a loved one. Overwhelmed by sadness that he wasnt able to be at his mothers bedside when she died Mark left the room. One of the Centers rabbis approached him and they spoke about what was troubling him. Mark said he wanted his moms suffering to end but knew that would mean letting her go forever. He said hed pray for peace for me and my family. I will never forget his kindness and compassion. 9 Shalom Bayit With nothing but the things she could fit in her car Arlene age 25 drove across the country with her toddler. With her babys violent father engaged in a ruthless pursuit to track her down she arrived in San Francisco alone with no income and no safe place to stay. Seeking help Arlene found Shalom Bayit which has literally been a life-saver. Their phenomenal staff helped Arlene find housing provided emergency financial assistance connected her with legal services to advise on interstate custody and located a Jewish preschool for her son. She also receives counseling and attends a support group comprised of other Jewish women where she discovered the comfort and connection she had been craving. At two synagogues Shalom Bayit organized collections of gifts for her son and necessities for her ensuring that mother and son could celebrate a happy Chanukah. Because of this help Arlene feels that the Jewish community was and is there for her. Most importantly because of Shalom Bayit she and her son are safe and happy free from violence and thriving. Aging with grace at the Jewish Home My mom had her first weekend back at her apartment and it went without a hitch because of all your hard work said Edith. To the staff that kept her content responding to all her requests you made her feel safe and important. To those who provided speech and occupational therapy you set into play some good habits that I hope she will continue during her convalescence. And to everyone who helps maintain a healthy environment with good food art music birds bunnies books clean private rooms cable TV ice cream in the afternoon a gift shop a salon and a chapel. That was the best brisket I ever had my mother said. I love it here. Read more on how your dollars impact lives worldwide by visiting jewishfed.org. DONOR ADVISED FUNDS 11 Shira Levines Philanthropic Mantra When Shira Levine talks about her philanthropic pursuits her eyes light up and a knowing grin emerges on her face. Anyone who knows Shira knows that she approaches all aspects of her life with passion gratitude and a desire to soak up knowledge and that she does this with absolute joy. Whether through her professional work or her giving she is an out-of-the-box thinker. This has made her a successful veteran of Silicon Valley and a thoughtful philanthropist and leader. For the latter accomplishment her tool is her Donor Advised Fund DAF. I worked at eBay in the early days Shira remembers. I was looking for ways to be strategic about my financial flexibility. I had always been charitable but here was a chance to be more deliberate about my giving. Shortly after her success at eBay her parents recommended that she open a Donor Advised Fund. The DAF which she opened at the Federation seemed like a great vehicle to start a life in philanthropy due to its ease of use and potential to help her fulfill what she called her philanthropic mantra Jews Jazz and Art. Her mantra has evolved over the years leading her to fund organizations and programs that include her familys interests world issues through a Jewish lens and most recently a deeper focus on the Torah. After being selected as a Wexner Fellow in the 2006 class Shira explains I became very interested in supporting Jewish nonprofits that bring us all closer to Torah physically theoretically or figuratively as well as bringing together the many voices on the Jewish spectrum. Shira seeks out the most innovative leaders and organizations as the ones she chooses to support organizations and programs that are breaking the mold and promising a huge potential for social impact. My family participates in cutting edge Jewish programs at emerging institutions Shira notes. Institutions like Urban Adamah a place where kids and young adults learn and love Judaism by working the landa place where that love also translates into helping feed the needy. I am looking to support an Oakland-based opportunity that uses Jewish ethics to address the widening economic opportunity gap. Oakland is where I live and I want to be a Jew who works on a brighter and more equitable future for the whole community. Besides Urban Adamah Shira also funds American Jewish World Service and Keshet and maintains a focus on art institutions comic books and local synagogues. I believe the Bay Area is leading a cultural revolution of modern Judaism that is accessible exciting and deeply meaningful Shira adds.
