SUMMARY:The Lost Princess: An Introduction to Jewish Mysticism and Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special presentation by Rabbi Paul Steinberg (Congregation Kol Shofar) on the intersection of Hassidic folktales and Jewish mysticism. \nInspired by the JCC’s current exhibit\, Rebbe Nachman’s The Lost Princess: An Illustrated Retelling by Jessica Tamar Deutsch\, Rabbi Steinberg will introduce us to the story of The Lost Princess\, a Hasidic folktale first told by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. It is an allegory of spiritual exile\, searching\, and the return of what has been lost. When a princess vanishes\, a faithful Viceroy sets out on a long and uncertain journey to bring her home. \nRebbe Nachman’s tale speaks across generations to the human experience of longing\, disconnection\, and the hope of return. Using the lens of Jewish mysticism\, we’ll gain a deeper takeaway of this beloved folktale. There is no charge to attend this event\, however we ask that you please register in advance. \nCosponsored by the Osher Marin JCC and Congregation Kol Shofar

SUMMARY:Sleep with me: On Rest and Insomnia in Hebrew Literature
\n__________________________________ \nSleep with me: On Rest and Insomnia in Hebrew Literature \nIn recent years\, we have been constantly asked to remain alert and responsive. Sleep\, in this context\, is often treated as a disruption: something to minimize in the name of productivity so that we can “get more done.” This talk turns to Hebrew literature to propose a different way of thinking about sleep: as a mode of thought and relation\, a vital way of engaging with the world. \nDrawing on psychoanalytic theory\, especially the work of Wilfred Bion\, we will read scenes of sleep in works by the Hebrew writers Amalia Kahana-Carmon\, Dalia Ravikovitch\, and Ronit Matalon\, in which rest appears as a process of coping\, creativity\, and even communication. In a reality that demands constant vigilance\, these literary texts invite us to reconsider sleep as an unexpected site of healing and repair. \nThis free workshop is presented in Hebrew.
