History & Project Goals
During the Soviet Union era, all Jewish related topics were taboo, and several generations grew up without any knowledge about murders of more than a million Jews during WWII in Ukraine. In many Jewish cities and towns in Ukraine the final solution was implemented - all Jews were killed. RememberUs.org is working closely with local officials, researchers, and educators in Ukraine to create online Holocaust museums to show the history of those shtetls and the horrific story of their disappearance.
These virtual museum-websites will serve as prototypes to future physical museums. Each website is a separate museum, and each page is a room. This is a very unique project, and much needed.
We are seeking a WordPress Expert/Web Developer to help us develop the virtual museums. RememberUs.org is a volunteer-run organization. We have a number of IT resources, but not enough time. Thus, we need help to get us started on this important project.
Scope & Deliverables
There are several deliverables for the RememberUs Holocaust Virtual Museum Project:
1. Work with other team members to select a suitable WordPress theme. A theme should be multilingual and require minimal customization.
2. Establish a framework for the project - with minimal programing, mostly using out of the box solution setup a WordPress "parent” theme. We would like to have a parent theme that will be serving as a foundation for the whole project.
3. Provide a knowledge transfer on how the framework was setup and to train how to use inheritance in WordPress framework.
The 3 line items above are dependent on each other and the main deliverables.
Next item, if preferred, can be completed by another consultant or our team members.
4. Setup multiple“child” instances and while inheriting parent’s, properties each site will have its own - color scheme, content, etc. Each child instance will be a site for a separate on-line museum. Each child instance is treated as a separate deliverable.
During the process of setting up the framework, we would be working very closely with the consultant making sure that we are moving in the right directions, and to do a constant knowledge exchange. While only one person will be setting up a framework, a few people will be working in parallel on setting up child schemes-museum sites.
Project Results
The project results for this initial phase are the launch of the virtual museum websites. This project is a very important milestone and a stepping stone for the follow up project - opening physical exhibitions, that is scheduled as a commemoration program of 75th anniversary of the massacres in 2016-2017.
Organization Description
RememberUs.org., located in Needham Massachusetts, is dedicated to raising awareness and commemorating the lesser-known events of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe, primarily in Ukraine.
Required Skills/Experience
Expert knowledge of WordPress, inheritance, Ui/UX/graphic design. Knowledge of Russian might be helpful.
