Holocaust Education

Background and Purpose:

The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund (the Federation) is pleased to announce a grant opportunity for Bay Area organizations with new projects to educate the general public, especially K-12 and college students, about the Holocaust. These grants are made possible by the Holocaust Memorial/Education Fund (the Fund), an endowed fund created almost 30 years ago following the installation of San Francisco’s Holocaust Memorial, to promote Holocaust education in the broader community.

Proposal Guidelines:

The Fund’s guidelines specify special research and new or one-time education projects that focus on effective and innovative methods. Given the increase of anti-Semitism today and connections between white nationalism and Holocaust denial, projects should also endeavor to promote empathy and counter bias and hate. In alignment with fund guidelines, the Federation seeks to support new projects rather than ongoing or routine programs. Proposals should detail new elements, beyond what is typically done annually, especially if related to long-standing programs such as Yom Ha Shoah commemorations. While we recognize the importance of continued Holocaust education within the Jewish community, these funds are specifically earmarked for work in the majority non-Jewish space; we do encourage Jewish organizations to pursue interfaith and other partnerships.

Grants will be prioritized for programs most closely aligned with the above guidelines and to organizations that:

  • Serve local or regional non-Jewish populations, especially K-12 students
  • Plan to involve a high number of participants
  • Propose a new or innovative methodology, a form of delivery, or lens on the Holocaust while also adhering to best practices in Holocaust education
  • Involve artists telling unknown or previously untold stories of the Holocaust
  • Include live or recorded first-person testimony (as available)
  • Work in partnership with other area organizations
  • Leverage Federation support to garner additional funding

Eligibility and Criteria:

Organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (or organization with fiscal sponsorship) with programming within the Federation’s service area
  • Alignment with the applying organization’s mission
  • Alignment with the Federation’s mission and funding policy on Israel-related programming
  • Strong organizational leadership and financial stability
  • Availability of competent staff and organizational resources to implement the program
  • Commitment to leverage Federation funding to secure other forms of support

Grant Opportunity

One-time grants between $500 and $7,500 will be awarded to grantees across the region. The grant period will be October 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022; activities should fall within those months.
