Student Debt Relief Pilot

Addressing Unmet Needs

Repaying Student Debt for Educators at Jewish Organizations

The Student Debt Relief Pilot was launched by the Federation in 2017, in partnership with Bob Tandler and Valli Benesch, to repay student loans for employees as a strategy to enhance employee recruitment and retention.

Modeled after for-profit company benefits, this three-year Pilot allows educators working a minimum of 20 hours per week teaching at select Bay Area Jewish institutions (listed below) to receive a monthly payment toward their student loans.

The Pilot invited partner employers and is administered by the Federation and Gradifi, a subsidiary of First Republic Bank.

For Partner Employers

Onboarding eligible employees for this employee benefit is easy when participating partners complete these steps:

  1. Determine employee eligibility at your organization. Refer to the JCF Employer Onboarding Guide.
  2. Choose whether you want to offer the fixed or stepped benefit:
    Program Stepped by Year
    Program Fixed $100 Constant
  3. Promote the Pilot to eligible employees.
    Gradifi Marketing Toolkit
  4. Employees should complete enrollment in one of three cycles.
  • January 1
  • April 1
  • September 1

5. Partner employers cover Gradifi's $2.50 monthly fee per participant.
6. Administrators need to complete the Federation's grant application as soon as educators have enrolled with Gradifi. Funding is based on a fiscal calendar July 1 to June 30, so grant requests should reflect funding needed through June 30, 2020. Questions regarding the grant application, please contact GrantManagement@sfjcf.org
