Breaking the Silent Stigma: What We Don’t Talk About When We Don’t Talk About Abortion

This program will include personal stories of abortion and abortion care, as well as insight into how public and private issues surrounding abortion and motherhood—including such factors as law, ethics, and economics—can affect choices made by those in the Jewish community considering abortion.

Our Presenters

Debbie Bamberger is a women’s health nurse practitioner and was a lead clinician and clinician trainer at Planned Parenthood Northern California for fifteen years. Bamberger is a co-founder of the Women’s Community Clinic in San Francisco and trains students and clinicians in the provision of implants and IUDs. She graduated from the UCSF Masters Entry Program in Nursing in 1994 and was the first nurse practitioner in California to be legally trained to provide first trimester abortion care. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in nursing practice from UCSF.

Debbie Findling holds a doctorate in education from the University of San Francisco and degrees in education, Hebrew letters, and women’s studies from the University of Judaism and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Formerly the deputy director of the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, she is currently the strategic philanthropic advisor to numerous foundations. She is co-founder of the Memory Garden, a memorial site for reflection and healing that includes education and outreach to raise awareness about fertility loss and infertility.

Michelle Oberman is the Katharine and George Alexander Professor of Law at the Santa Clara University School of Law. She focuses on the legal and ethical issues surrounding adolescence, pregnancy and motherhood, and is the author of several books. Her most recent book, Her Body, Our Laws: On the Frontlines of the Abortion War from El Salvador to Oklahoma, discusses what will and will not happen if abortion becomes illegal in the United States.
