The Charlottesville Case: Opposing White Nationalism

Do you want to do something about white nationalist violence?

Once in a generation, a case comes along that can change history. On Wednesday, November 13, Congregation Emanu-El is honored to be hosting Integrity First for America (IFA), a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to holding accountable those who threaten longstanding principles of our democracy. IFA is taking on the leadership of the white nationalist movement in a landmark court case to send a clear message that violent hate has no place in our country.

Join Rabbi Jason Rodich in conversation with the lead attorneys on the case: Roberta Kaplan, who successfully argued for marriage equality before the US Supreme Court; Karen Dunn, an award-winning trial attorney; and Amy Spitalnick, IFA’s Executive Director.

This event is co-sponsored by Grace Cathedral, the Jewish Center for Justice, the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund, the Jewish Community Relations Council, the Religious Action Center, the San Francisco Interfaith Council, Sha’ar Zahav, and the Unity Group.

Roberta Kaplan
Roberta (“Robbie”) Kaplan is the founding partner at Kaplan Hecker & Fink. A formidable litigator with decades of experience in both commercial and civil rights litigation, Robbie has become an expert in cutting-edge areas of law. As the ABA Journal has written, Robbie “could be described as a specialist in emerging law. She litigates cases that shape the legal structure within which Americans live, love, work and hail cabs.” Robbie was recently named one of the Top 10 Female Litigators in the country by Benchmark Litigation. She successfully argued for marriage equality before the US Supreme Court.
Karen Dunn
Karen, Partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, is an accomplished trial lawyer and courtroom advocate. Karen led BSF’s defense of Uber in an intensely watched and hotly contested trade secrets case brought by Waymo regarding the future of self-driving cars. The case ended in a favorable settlement following four days of trial, which included Karen’s examination of former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. Prior to that and in the span of one year, together with BSF partner Bill Isaacson, Karen won high-dollar jury verdicts for two of America’s top technology companies. The following year—and again this past year—she successfully argued summary judgment resulting in major victories in two other high-stakes cases for top technology companies. Previously, Karen and her co-counsel won a two-year pro bono legal battle in local and federal courts to enforce Washington D.C.’s Local Budget Autonomy Act. Lawdragon, which named Karen one of America's 500 Leading Lawyers, called Karen’s practice “one of the finest litigation/crisis-management practices in the country.”
