A Virtual Event of the Jewish Community Library

The History and Ethics of Jewish Food

Dr. Gross will discuss his new co-edited book, "Feasting and Fasting: The History and Ethics of Jewish Food" (New York University Press), which explores the intertwinement of food and Jewish traditions. Gross’s presentation will also consider why food is especially important for Jewish communities to reflect upon in the age of Covid-19.

Aaron S. Gross is a professor of Jewish studies at the University of San Diego, a past president of the Society for Jewish Ethics, and founder and CEO of the nonprofit advocacy group Farm Forward, which runs the Jewish Initiative for Animals. He collaborated with Jonathan Safran Foer on Foer’s best-selling book "Eating Animals," and is one of the writers for the film version narrated by Natalie Portman. He is the author of "The Question of the Animal and Religion" and the co-editor of "Feasting and Fasting: The History and Ethics of Jewish Food."
