Places

Following a sold out run at 59E59, Dixon Place presents Places, a multimedia solo show about one of Broadway's biggest stars, silent film legend and trailblazing lesbian iconoclast, Alla Nazimova, written and performed by Romy Nordlinger (Places, 59East59/Edinburgh Fringe). Cailín Heffernan* directs. One performance will be staged at Dixon Place, 161A Chrystie Street in NYC on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 7:30pm.

Long before Madonna, the world was Gaga for Nazimova. Places, a theatrical multimedia solo show, tells the story of Alla Nazimova, the forgotten lesbian trailblazer, iconoclast and the greatest star you’ve never heard of. Escaping anti-semitic Tsarist Russia, she became Broadway’s biggest star with the Shubert’s naming a theater after her. Nazimova also became Hollywood’s highest paid silent screen icon and the film industry’s first female director and producer. Defying moral and artistic codes of her time, she was forced into obscurity. Returning from the grave, Nazimova raises her voice, reclaiming our collective history, lighting the way to diversity. “By opening our eyes to the past, we are better able to see our present.”

“Sexism, racism, homophobia, anti-semitism, and ageism: Nazimova was fighting these contemporary struggles back in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, but alone and without a twitter account,” stated playwright and performer Romy Nordlinger. “In writing and performing Places, I am setting the record straight and telling Nazimova’s magnificent story. We are all the stories we tell, and an artist is only dead when the last person to remember them dies.”

Places was partially developed in a production of 'Stage Struck' helmed by Mari Lyn Henry and her Society For The Preservation Of Theatrical History committed to preserving the legacy of legendary actresses.

Cailín Heffernan (director) - Her recent outings include Direction/Book (music/lyrics – Henry Aronson) of Loveless Texas at the Sheen Center; archival recording of Letters Home by Rose Leiman Goldemberg with Kathleen Chalfant at Lincoln Center; the immersive musical Impossible But True; Hello, Dolly with Donny Most and Judy Norton, and Monte Cristo at Urban Stages. She is Associate Artistic Director of Boomerang Theatre Company; Artistic Advisor to New Light Theatre Project and Texas Family Musicals. Cailín is also the Resident Director of National Schoolhouse and a member of the Creative Team for DionysusFest in Athens, Greece. She is founding Artistic Director of the dance/theater company, Manhattan Dance-Theatre from 1980-1998. She’s a member of SDC, Dramatists Guild, AEA, SAG-AFTRA.

Adam Burns (video designer) - Adam’s artwork, films, screenplays and theater video designs have been shown internationally, including major New York venues like the Big Apple Film Festival, the New York International Fringe Festival and Tribeca Cinemas. Shows include Lipstick, Broadville, S*x + Sealing Wax, and now Places. Adam lived on Greyhound buses for a year writing his first novel and adapted his second into a feature screenplay.
