Russian-Speaking Jews Passover in the Desert 2018

Join us on a Passover journey on April 5-8

Why Passover? Why the desert?

We go to the desert each year to connect to each other and to experience Passover – the wandering in the desert – the way our ancestors did thousands of years ago. We want to hear your stories and to know what FREEDOM means for you. We want to help you celebrate this holiday in a way that is meaningful for YOU and we want to share in that experience.

This Passover Journey is for everyone, and lasts four days. Costs are:

  • Adults: $85; Early Bird (before March 26): $50
  • Children (age 6-16): $30; Early Bird (before March 26): $20
  • Children under 6: free

What to bring
It is going to be cold. Remember to bring warm clothes, including hats, gloves, and scarves. Refer to the Sample Packing List for other items that you need to bring.

Your role
CO-CREATE. Please share your SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, and EXPERIENCES with people during this event. In the past, participants have led workshops, tended the fire, played music, taught others to meditate, cooked together, helped set up the camp, participated in theater productions, DJ-ed and VJ-ed, and put together art installations.

LEAVE NO TRACE. There is no garbage collection service during Passover in the Desert – we are all responsible for properly removing all trash. Everything you bring might become trash: tent stakes, bottle caps, orange peels, cigarette butts, pistachio shells. According to our permit, we must leave the land in its original condition. So, we ask ALL of YOU to share in the responsibility and TAKE YOUR TRASH WITH YOU at the end of the event.

PARTICIPATE IN TAKE-DOWN AND CLEAN-UP. We rely exclusively on YOU for most of the organizational and communal tasks, including transportation of equipment and building of the infrastructure. PLEASE help the organizers take down, pack and load all communal structures and equipment, and clean up the site before departure.

Food
We all need to eat! And it's more fun to do it together! At this event, everybody is responsible for their own food. However, we encourage you to connect with other participants to create communal meals. Best practice from prior years was when people joined into groups and prepared their food with enough to share with others. When everybody shares, nobody goes hungry, especially in a Jewish family.

Friday night: please bring something for Shabbat potluck dinner

Saturday night: communal dinner; looking for volunteers to help roast meat and make shashlyki for everyone

Sunday morning: potluck breakfast and closing circle; bring fruits and we will make coffee for everyone and provide matzah and shmeers.

Recreation/Teaching/Activity
If you are interested in leading an activity, please contact Irina Klay.

We are collecting money. What will it cover?
The registration fee will cover the following organizational expenses: Bureau of Land Management fees for use of the federal lands, other permits, rental costs for the truck, toilets, generator and other communal equipment, gas and other camping supplies.
