Spring Exhibit Opening at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life
Memories of Jewish Life at the Magnes Collection
Roman Vishniac (1897-1990) displays one of his iconic photographs. His archive has been gifted to The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life in Berkeley.
On Tuesday, March 5, The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life will open the exhibition "Memory Objects" and celebrate the gift of the Roman Vishniac archive from his daughter, Mara Vishniac Kohn (1926-1918). Her children will be on hand for the occasion.
The Vishniac archive was previously on loan to the New York’s International Center of Photography (ICP). It consists of approximately 6,500 prints, 10,000 slides, 40 albums of negatives, 20 binders of contact sheets, 1,500 scientific prints, 400 audiovisual recordings, and a large number of personal documents and notebooks which will be reviewed and organized in the coming years.
“Memory Objects: Judaica Collections, Global Migrations” features a selection of prized personal and community artifacts that were separated or taken from their original owners and found their way to museums, collectors and art dealers. In conjunction with the exhibit, Tom Freudenheim (former museum director and currently vice president of the American Federation of Arts) will speak about “Collecting in Times of Crisis.” One of the items on view will be Photosammlung, a photographic catalog of a Judaica art which is a recent gift from Ernst Freudenheim, the speaker’s father.
