Teen Initiative Community Convening on Racial Justice

Join us as we honor the recipient of the 2021 Award for Excellence in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement and focus on the topic of Racial Justice. Our afternoon will kick off with a framing on racial justice in the Bay Area by Dr. Analucia Lopezrevoredo, Project Shamash Senior Director at Bend the Arc. She will speak on how we are just "getting started" along the long road to racial equity. Analucia will lead us in a conversation that explores how the American Jewish community can continue to make our commitments to racial-equity work actionable and lifelong.

We will then learn with Etgar 36 Founder and Director, Billy Planer, who has worked with Jewish teens in the racial justice space for 25 years. We’ll explore how we can empower our teens to get involved in racial justice issues here in the Bay Area and inspire them to take action to make the world a better place.

Our program will wrap up by presenting the 2020 Award for Excellence in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement to Devra Aarons, the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement. We are pleased to announce that the 2021 Award for Excellence in Jewish Youth Education and Engagement will be presented to Zephira Derblich-Milea of Shalom Bayit.

Zephira Derblich-Milea
As Shalom Bayit’s Youth Program Manager, Zephira can answer questions about our Love Shouldn’t Hurt program and strategize how to bring healthy relationships, violence prevention, and consent education into your communities. Zephira has worked as a violence prevention educator for over 17 years. In 2005 she began managing Love Shouldn’t Hurt (LSH), Shalom Bayit’s outreach and prevention program for Jewish youth. In her own words: “I am so grateful for the work I do at Shalom Bayit to help create a culture of consent and end domestic violence. It is truly a gift to be able to support and empower youth in having healthy friendships and relationships in their lives.”
