Navigating Conflict: The Power of De-escalation is a foundational overview of de-escalation techniques developed by Secure Community Network (SCN). The goal of this course is to provide basic understanding and introduction to the skills and techniques to defuse or reduce tension, hostility, and/or conflict in situations. The course covers the following topics: the definition de-escalation, common escalation triggers, the de-escalation process, communication skills, and handling aggression.

Rafael Brinner (He/Him), Director of Community Security
Rafi Brinner leads the Federation's community security program, which provides security training and advice to houses of worship, schools, community organizations, and other faith-based nonprofits around the Bay. Rafi grew up in Berkeley and Jerusalem, left to pursue a career in counterterrorism in Washington DC and London, and returned to the Bay Area in 2004 to work with law enforcement and homeland security agencies before bringing his expertise back to our community in 2018 after the events in Charlottesville.
Molly Jozer (She/They), Community Security Advisor
Molly Jozer is a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. She holds a degree in Homeland Security Studies and a certification as a DEI peer educator from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. In her military career she has worked in personnel logistics, ship systems engineering and safety & security training and development. Since leaving the military, she has worked as an environmental & occupational safety consultant and, more recently, with Jewish Family Services of Greater New Haven, CT as a content strategist and marketing consultant. In their free time, Molly enjoys hiking with Sara, their two cats, AND their two dogs, going to the beach and hunting for the best ice cream in the bay area. They are an avid classic car fan, and she recently did a full restoration of a 1966 Ford Mustang. She resides in the east bay with her amazing wife, Sara, who is attending UC Berkeley for her PhD and their four pets: Banjo, Brandi, Binx and Salem.
