Wilderness Torah

Background

In a highly competitive process, Wilderness Torah (WT) was just awarded multiple-year seed funding from the Jewish Community Federation to execute its plan to launch a for-profit training and consulting business based on its successful nonprofit model.  The new venture will consist of multiple training “institutes” and on-going coaching for educators and leaders throughout the U.S. and overseas. The social venture enables others to replicate WT’s nature-based community building and educational model; it is in direct response to high demand from communities in the U.S. and beyond including Israel, UK, Mexico and Canada.

Scope

Wilderness Torah seeks an industry expert to lead the business model development for its new social venture. The consultant would work closely with WT’s professional leadership in developing the business model.

The model would provide a roadmap for launching the venture employing lean startup principles (e.g. for customer development and acquisition; testing new programs and services) as well as guidance on internal operations and on high-level marketing strategy.  A full scale marketing plan would follow the business model development and is NOT part of this engagement.

Ideally, the consultant would serve as an on-going advisor to Wilderness Torah as it launches the consulting and training business.

Project Results

A roadmap to create the foundation to launch and scale a successful training/consulting business that will:

  1. Help generate earned-income allowing WT become more financially sustainable.
  2. Help communities across the Jewish world (nationally and internationally) implement WT’s transformational Jewish engagement model.

Organization Description

Named one of the nation's most innovative Jewish nonprofits four years running, Wilderness Torah connects Jewish traditions to nature. Since starting in 2007, WT which is based in Berkeley, has served more than 6,000 participants with multi-generational holiday festivals; K-12 outdoor Jewish education; and custom programs for Jewish institutions. WT's programs consistently sell out and have remarkable impact, especially in connecting young adults and the disengaged enthusiastically back to Judaism.
