Russian-Speaking Jews Program

Background

The Federation’s Russian-Speaking Jews Program is holding a major event for over 200 attendees at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto on May 3rd to commemorate Jews who fought in the Russian Army in World War II. During World War II, 200,000 Jews served in the Soviet Army forces. While these men fought and died like all other soldiers, they were identified as Jews by the Soviet State. They were not given proper Jewish burials nor honored with Kaddish. This event honors their memory and tells the often-overlooked story of Jewish Resistance.

Scope

We need one or more consultants to make a five-minute video from rare existing digital interviews of Jews who served in the Army.  We have 10 hours of digital video from six interviewees.

The video will be featured at the event, posted on the Jewish Community Federation’s website (www.JewishFed.org), and submitted to e-jewishphilanthropy for publishing along with a corresponding article.

Project Results

The video will help to save a part of invaluable oral history that describes an important and relatively unknown role of Russian Jews during WW II. It will serve to educate, connect generations and keep this vital history alive.

Organization Description

The Russian-Speaking Jews Program of the Jewish Community Federation, based in San Francisco, brings first and second-generation Russian-speaking Jews together through community engagement opportunities, philanthropic ventures, and social networking. Our Program fosters deeper connections to Jewish life and to one another.
