If you are 70½ or older, you can donate up to $111,000 per year, tax-free, from your traditional or Roth IRA directly to the Federation.

Uses

You can use a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA for

How it Works

  • Provide your IRA administrator with instructions to make a QCD directly to the Federation. They may direct you to a paper form, an online form, or an IRA checkbook.
    • Or, download our request form, fill it out, and send to your IRA administrator.
  • To count towards the current tax year, your gift must be received by theĀ Federation no later than December 31, or the last weekday of the year.
  • You will not receive a charitable deduction, but the QCD potentially lowers your tax liability. For many, tax benefits can be largely the same as a charitable deduction; for others it may be greater as noted above.
  • QCDs may not be made to a donor advised fund or supporting foundation.
  • If you are married, both partners may take advantage of the QCD opportunity.

Benefits

Also called IRA charitable rollover gifts, qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) can count towards your required minimum distribution (RMD). Where you would have otherwise paid taxes on your RMD, instead you will have given a gift to support the Jewish community.

Qualified charitable distributions from your traditional IRA can potentially provide tax benefits beyond reduced income tax. If your taxable RMD income would cause you to pay taxes at a higher overall rate, QCDs may keep you out of the higher tax bracket, providing significant tax savings. For those who do not itemize, QCDs can lower income taxes in an amount roughly equivalent to a charitable deduction.
