Advisory Board Member: Building a Jewish Fair Trade Movement
You are here
Overview
Advisory Board Member Position
Fair Trade Judaica is the only organization in the U.S. focused on building a Jewish ethical consumer movement. As a fiscally-sponsored nonprofit, the Advisory Board serves as the board of directors but without the fiduciary responsibility. We currently have six Advisory Board members from across the country and plan to grow to 15 total. We wish to have a majority from the SF Bay Area. We seek people who enjoy working in a close-knit, consensus-driven, social-justice focused, small organization making a big impact.
Specific responsibilities include:
1. Regularly attend and actively participate in Advisory Board meetings.
2. Provide leadership to FTJ by serving on at least one board committee (Education/Outreach, Earned Income Strategies, Fund Development).
3. Advocate and network on behalf of FTJ as an organization and in support of its mission.
4. Make a meaningful annual financial contribution, to the extent of each member's capacity.
5. Provide assistance or support to the fundraising efforts - actively cultivate and solicit potential donors; host house party or other fundraising event; assist with foundation research and/or grant writing; provide administrative support for fundraising events or mailings; assist with donor acknowledgements.
6. Assist with recruitment of new Advisory Board members.
7. Participate in at least one educational or outreach event per year.
Logistics
Advisory Board members attend monthly meetings (local people try to meet in person if possible, and remotely for others), one annual all-day retreat and participate in Committee work.
Project Results
Fair Trade Judaica has successfully shifted from a start-up to a much more stable organization. We are receiving increased demand for our services, but do not yet have sufficient capacity to do the fundraising and community development work to fully advance the organization. We are also focusing on strengthening our earned income strategies to build financial self-sustainability. The addition of new board members would significantly help grow our capacity and impact.
Organization Description
Fair Trade Judaica, a young growing nonprofit based in the East Bay, is building a fair trade movement within the Jewish community nationally through the sale and distribution of Fair Trade Judaica products and community-wide education.
Required Skills/Experience
We are seeking candidates with skills/experience in any of the following areas: strategic planning, marketing/PR, fundraising, organizational development, online retail, and/or the ability to build Jewish community connections to advance our work.
