Strategic Grantmaking
We take a sophisticated, multipronged approach to building, supporting, and sustaining Jewish community.
We provide strategic support in many forms – all designed to build and strengthen community organizations and Jewish life. Direct grants to partner organizations fall under three main categories of impact: Inspiring Jewish Life and Learning, Caring through Community, and Strengthening Israeli Society.
The way we make grants has evolved over time, shifting from a traditional allocation model (annual grantmaking to a limited number of beneficiary agencies) to a more strategic partnership model that invests in programs, organizations, and initiatives that advance change toward the Federation’s mission and overarching goals.
Our direct grants are made through funds from:
- The Annual Campaign
- Designated Annual Fundraising
- The Endowment Fund

We also facilitate grants through personal philanthropic vehicles under our management
The Federation administers 891 Donor Advised Funds, which support a full range of charitable organizations in the Jewish and general communities; as well as 27 Supporting Foundations, which engage multiple generations in anchoring meaning, purpose and continuity in their personal and family philanthropy.
