Israel battles massive blaze

A devastating forest fire broke out Thursday morning in the Carmel Mountains near Haifa. Sadly, it has already killed 40 people, burned buildings and forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu has declared a state of emergency and it is uncertain when the flames will be contained. Not only is our Jewish community anguished by this tragedy, but also the City of San Francisco, which has enjoyed a close relationship with Haifa, as evidenced by last month's visit by Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav. It is critical that we do whatever we can to provide relief and assistance in this time of need.

An emergency fund is open now at the Federation and is available to receive donations online. We are working with our on-the-ground partners in Israel to determine both the short and long-term needs of those affected, and your contributions will be directly distributed to the most effective service providers. To mail your donations, please send to: The Jewish Community Federation - 2010 Israel Fire Relief Fund, 121 Steuart Street, San Francisco, CA 94105.

Donate to the Israel Fire Relief Fund.

We will monitor the emergency assistance efforts and will continue to keep you informed. As we join with family and friends to celebrate the Hanukkah holiday, please keep those impacted by this tragedy in your hearts and prayers. We thank you for your kindness and generosity during this time of crisis in Israel.
