Jewish films at the Latino Film Festival

The International Latino Film Society is including several films dedicated to the Jewish experience as part of the programming of the 2008 International Latino Film Festival. This program is generously sponsored by the Alexander and June L. Maisin Foundation of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund. The acclaimed Festival, which celebrates the diversity of Latino culture through the timeless medium of film, runs from November 7 — 23, 2008. All films include English subtitles. The Jewish-themed programming for the 2008 festival includes:

“The Fire Within: Jews in the Amazonian Rainforest” Dir. Lorry Salcedo Mitrani, 2008, Peru, 118 min. In the 19th century, many young Jewish men, descendants of Spanish Sephardic Jews, left Morocco for the Amazonian town of Iquitos, Peru, seeking fortunes in the rubber boom and also starting new families that would use their Jewish surnames. This is the story of those children and their descendants in the journey for identity and spirituality.
