In Memoriam: Ann Bear

December 27, 1940 – November 17, 2012

The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund mourns the passing of a much beloved community leader, Ann Bear.  A philanthropist and mentor, Ann was a symbol of valor, vision, and generosity - always leading by example, firm in her commitments, tenacious in her drive, and passionate about her causes.

Born in New York, Ann moved to the Bay Area from Tulsa Oklahoma in 1989.  Known for her eclectic fashion and superior baking skills, Ann opened her home to host events and before long, found herself serving on numerous boards and committees, including the JCF Board of Trustees, Leadership Development, and Women’s Philanthropy. She received the Judith Chapman Memorial Leadership Award in 2009.

Ann’s loyalty to Federation was unwavering; her greatest passion was women’s philanthropy.  “I have probably made an impact on an assortment of younger women. Without them the world would be a far worse place,” said Ann. In honor of her visionary leadership, a special proclamation was made by Mayor Gavin Newsom, officially naming May 21, 2009, as “Ann Bear Day” in the city and county of San Francisco.

Married to Irwin Bear, z"l, an equally compassionate community leader, Ann’s legacy gift will help ensure that future generations have the opportunity to engage in the richness of Jewish life. We extend our deepest sympathies to Ann’s community of family and friends.
