PJ Library Classroom Storytime

We dropped in on a storytime in the Aleph classrom of three and four year olds at the Early Childhood Education Center at the Osher Marin JCC in San Rafael. They were waiting eagerly to hear the story of Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, by Simms Taback, a featured book of The PJ Library®. The story is about Joseph, a Jewish farmer who has a little striped overcoat. When it is old, Joseph makes it into a little jacket and so on until he makes it into a button. Then Joseph loses the button and makes a story out of it. The moral of the story is "you can always make something out of nothing." The kids listened quietly as their teacher, Nancy, read the book and acted out different parts of the story. Here are some of the preschoolers thoughts on this beautiful story:

"He is always making a new thing in this book." ~Nathan

"I like it when there is the tiny hole in the book." ~Arielle

"I like when we keep saying together, 'when it gets old and worn.' He was always building a different thing." ~Zane

"I love this book the best!" ~Jacob

Teachers and parents can weave The PJ Library® books into engaging storytimes at preschool and at home. Reading stories with children is among the most powerful and nurturing early childhood learning experiences. The PJ Library® books can help transform these moments into Jewish experiences.
