Visual Judaica: Jewish Icons and Judaica Collections in the early 20th century (and how they influenced artist, Arthur Szyk)
Illustrator and political caricaturist, Arthur Szyk (1894–1951) used motifs inspired by the Bible, history, politics, and culture to pair extraordinary craftsmanship, with searing commentary on a diverse range of subjects including Judaism, the American War of Independence, the Second World War, the Holocaust, and the founding of the State of Israel.
Shir Gal Kochavi, Assistant Curator at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life, will examine items of twentieth century Judaica that inspired Szyk’s celebrated creations. She will bring examples of key Jewish visual elements such as the Lion of Judah and Noah’s dove, and show how these and Biblical phrases such as “the land of milk and honey” became recurrent themes for the artist.
