Nancy Fox
Nancy can’t remember a time when she couldn’t play a keyboard. Sitting on a piano bench every night in Detroit beside her musician-father, she learned her first melody, George Gershwin’s “Lady Be Good,” when she was three. By five, she was writing her own songs. Playing by ear after that, she embraced tunes from the ‘20s, ‘30’s, ‘40s and beyond. Along the way she’s acquired a repertoire of many thousands of tunes — in her head. Nancy calls herself a “spoke-alist,” in the Rex Harrison tradition, rather than a vocalist. Her showmanship is unique, seasoning her 80 original programs with entertaining backstories of the melodies and their composers. Her virtuosity stems from the fact that she’s virtually always performed, including being a children’s puppeteer for decades and a lover of many musical genres. She’s presented shows in countless Bay Area senior centers and is thrilled to return to the JCCSF.
