Edgar Feuchtwanger's "Hitler, My Neighbor: Memories of a Jewish Childhood, 1929-1939"

Hitler My Neighbor: Memories of a Jewish Childhood, 1929–1939 is about Edgar Feuchtwanger's unique experience as a young boy, watching Hitler from inside the windows of his home as the world around him crumbled.

Edgar Feuchtwanger was born in Munich in 1924 and immigrated to England in 1939. He studied at Cambridge University and taught history at the University of Southampton until he retired in 1989. His major works include From Weimar to Hitler, Disraeli, and Imperial Germany 1850–1918. In 2003 he received the Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany for promoting Anglo German relations.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Nathan Szajnberg. Born in Germany and raised in the US, Dr. Szajnberg attended college and medical school at the University of Chicago. He was the Freud Professor of Psychoanalysis at the Hebrew University and is the author of several books on development, as well as a recent novel, Jerusaland: An Insignificant Death. In April 2018, Dr. Szajnberg spoke at TEDxPaloAlto and his talk can be viewed here.

Dr. Szajnberg is in private practice in Palo Alto.

"The title says it all. A young Jewish boy growing up in Munich in the 1930s, Feuchtwanger writes about living across the street from Hitler, the future mass murderer he could see through his window."
~ New York Times Book Review

"He can't wrap his mind around the contradictions, but neither can many adults. Illuminating how it was possible for so many to be so confused is the book's great achievement."
~ New Yorker

"The narrative, presented in a rigorous and pleasant way…harmoniously blends the account of the everyday life of this wealthy, refined and cultivated Jewish family…and that of political events as they unfolded under their windows."
~ Le Figaro
