Farm Carpentry Essentials: Building Raised Beds

Join us on the farm for an immersive and interactive daylong farm carpentry workshop!

Whether you're planning a big project or just want to learn some basic skills, this course will help you gain the confidence to grab some tools and build. Tailored to both novices and seasoned DIYers, this workshop gives you the foundation and tricks of the trade to build your own custom carpentry projects at home or in the garden.

Together we will build redwood raised beds that will be an accessible addition to our main farm field. While everyone will have a hand in all elements of the project, advanced students will continue to hone their skills on the more complicated project components. By the end of the day you will walk away with the following building essentials: power tools, joinery, building sequencing, layout technique and materials sourcing.

This workshop takes place at Urban Adamah from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Saturday, November 16th, 2019. Participation for the entire workshop is required. Tickets are $125 - $250 sliding scale. Tea, coffee, and snacks will be provided. Please bring lunch to picnic on the farm.

We would love to have you join us for this course! Please get in touch with one of our seasoned instructors with any questions.

About the Instructors:

Matt Zimbalist previously served as Site Manager at Urban Adamah, helping to develop the new 2.2 acre urban farm retreat center in Berkeley. He has designed and built two school gardens in Santa Cruz, developed a seven acre working farm residence in the Santa Cruz mountains, and helped build out farm infrastructure throughout the state. His building passions have led him to Timber Framing, large scale metal fabricating, furniture making, and crafting rustic farm buildings. He currently runs his own sustainable landscape construction firm Traditional Craftworks specializing in ecological water systems, farm infrastructure, and artisan building. Matt has been teaching carpentry and woodworking classes in the Bay Area since 2015.

Kyle Reddin is the current Facilities Manager at Urban Adamah. His introduction to carpentry was as a kid building bird houses with his grandfather, and he's had an affinity for working with his hands ever since. He's honed his carpentry skills working on projects both on the farm and at his home in North Oakland. He loves growing food, DIY projects, and sharing his passions and experiences with others!

Accessibility Notes: This workshop will be held in the Southeast corner of the farm, which is fully ADA accessible. The workshop will involve using power tools, heavy lifting, and working outdoors. For any questions about accessibility, please reach out to Kyle at kyle@urbanadamah.org.
