Stealth Altruism: Forbidden Care as Jewish Resistance

One of the least known aspects of the Holocaust is its “help” story, an inspiring account of altruistic care provided at great peril by Jews for others. Under Nazi occupation, Jews dared to relieve suffering and raise chances of survival for other Jews—in ghettos, during transport, and in concentration camps—at great personal risk. Professor Shostak has combed through more than two hundred survivor memoirs in order to share this inspiring testament to the actions of courageous individuals.

Art Shostak is emeritus professor of sociology at Drexel University. He received his PhD from Princeton in 1961 and subsequently taught at the Wharton School of Commerce and Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Shostak has spoken throughout the United States, as well as in Australia, Israel, and New Zealand, on the topic of stealth altruism during the Holocaust. Stealth Altruism: Forbidden Care as Jewish Resistance in the Holocaust is his 34th book.
