Join Us to Explore the Mindset of Today’s Parenting Generation

Students are coming to campus with unprecedented levels of connection to their families, including new levels of parental involvement. This session presents research on today’s parents and explores their attitudes towards and use of technology, thoughts about their students’ transition to college, and communication with their students. Explore how commonly “bulldozer” behaviors are seen in our sample and consider implications for working with students while encouraging their growth and success in light of their parent’s mindset.

Speakers: 
Amy Miller
Dr. Amy Chasteen Miller serves as a Professor of Sociology and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Miller oversees a range of offices and initiatives related to faculty development and student success. A sociologist by training, Dr. Miller's primary expertise is in gender studies and culture. She currently focuses her research on student engagement, diversity, and inclusion in higher education.
Dr. Miller received an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama, a Masters of Arts in Sociology at the University of Tennessee and a Ph.D. in Sociology and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan.
Larry A. Sparkman
Larry A. Sparkman serves as the Director of the Luckyday Foundation Citizenship Scholars Program, a privately funded scholarship and four-year student development program that and facilitates a living-learning community, service learning, and servant leadership at The University of Southern Mississippi. Larry holds a Master of Social Work from Louisiana State University, Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from The University of Southern Mississippi.
Joseph Weinberg
Joseph Weinberg is the Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Southern Mississippi, a Luckyday Faculty Fellow, and a “shade tree statistician”. Originally from Asheville, NC, his academic training came from American University (BA), North Carolina State University (MA), and the University of North Carolina (PhD). His "on the job" training came from the US House of Representatives, where he served as a Legislative Assistant to a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee.
