The Federation Responds to Poway Synagogue Shooting

San Francisco, CA – The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund condemns today’s shooting at Chabad of Poway. This hate crime targeted Jews while they celebrated the last day of Passover. As our hearts break at this news, we grieve and stand together with the Poway Jewish community, Chabad of Poway, the victims, and their families.

The Federation’s Director of Jewish Community Security coordinated with local law enforcement to have officers visit Chabad synagogues around the Bay Area who do not use telephones or email on Shabbat. These horrible attacks are not the work of an organized group, but they are intended to inspire others to follow suit. This reinforces the need for our community to be both prepared and resilient in the face of an unpredictable threat.

As we end the celebration of Passover, we reflect on our shared history of freedom from slavery, and the role of Judaism to guide us toward a better world. May we come together in the spirit of tikkun olam and repair our world against hate and violence.
