The Jewish Community Federation Presents: A Yom Ha’atzmaut Celebration of Israel’s 66th Independence Day Tuesday, May 6, in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – On Tuesday, May 6, the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties (the Federation), in partnership with the San Francisco-based Jewish Community Relations Council and the Consulate General of Israel, will present: A Yom Ha’atzmaut Celebration of Israel’s 66th Independence Day. This community celebration will feature live Israeli music (including Bay Area-based The Peatot and Sol Tevél), falafel vendors, and community leaders, and will take place from 12:00pm to 1:30pm on Tuesday, May 6, at Justin Herman Plaza at San Francisco’s Embarcadero. Come for the music, stay for the falafel. All are welcome; no cover charge.
 
This year’s recipients of the Israel in our Hearts Awards – the Federation’s honor for Bay Area community leaders who have demonstrated outstanding and innovative commitment to Israel, to be given out on May 6 – are:

  • Myron Zimmerman, a native of San Francisco, founded the MZ Foundation in the 1990s for the purpose of fighting anti-Semitism and for pro-Israel advocacy. The Foundation currently funds more than 60 organizations in 12 countries.
  • Riva Berelson, the COO and Executive VP of the Berelson Company, has volunteered her time, energy and resources for numerous organizations supporting Israel, including the Federation, the Anti-Defamation League, and Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. She is an active and passionate member of the Federation’s Israel and Overseas Committee.
  • Murray L. Zucker, MD, a psychiatrist and medical director, serves on the board of American Friends of Tel Aviv University and AIPAC, and is active with Stand With Us, American Physicians for Israel, and numerous other U.S.-Israeli institutions.

Additionally, in honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut, the Federation will:

  • Hold its annual YAD Blue and White Monday, a young adult evening celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, on May 5 at 6pm. Food, Fun, Flags, and a Photo Booth. All proceeds will go to the Federation’s Israel Fund.
  • Support special Yom Ha’atzmaut-related events at local congregations and JCCs
  • Partner with JCRC to create special Yom Ha’atzmaut education kits for local congregations, religious schools and day schools
  • Cosponsor Israeli arts and cultural programming: http://www.jewishfed.org/event
