SF Shabbaton in Honor of Yom HaAtzmaut - Israel's 70th Birthday

This year, we will gather on April 21-22 to celebrate Israel's 70th Birthday with a local retreat, the SF Shabbaton at B'nai Emunah.  Our Southside Jewish Collaborative partners will join with us as we enjoy a full weekend of food, wine, music (Klezmania! Trio) and learning with Dr. Henry Shreibman, our scholar in residence.  The topic will be Fresh Discoveries in Biblical Archaeology.

Northern Israel was a hot bed of creativity, rebellion and raw materialism. The Galilee and the Golan are the epicenter of the interface between the Rabbis, the Romans and Early Christianity. Northern Israel today remains a hopeful symbol of coexistence and mutual respect and understanding.

Rabbi Henry M. Shreibman, Ph.D.
Rabbi Henry M. Shreibman has served as a faculty member at Dominican University since 2005 . He is an Assistant Professor of Religion and Philosophy, who has reintroduced the study of Biblical Hebrew and Latin while teaching a blend of Applied Ethics, Ethics & Healthcare and comparative Religion classes. He is a visiting professor at CSU Sonoma State where he helped start their Jewish Studies program in 2010. He has also served on faculty at UC Davis. His academic focus is at the juncture of comparative ancient ethics/philosophy & wisdom literature, the synergy of the Greco-Roman period in Israel with the rise of early Christianity and the evolution of anti-Semitism. He has been active in interfaith / multi-cultural visioning and work for over 40 years in the US, England and Israel.
In 2008, Shreibman was awarded the Teacher of the Year at Dominican University as an adjunct professor. He was nominated again for Teacher of the Year in 2014 as a full time professor.
He earned a Ph.D., M.Phil and M.A. from Columbia University, NY in comparative ancient religions and literatures. He is an ordained Rabbi since 1981 from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Philadelphia.
Shreibman received the Executive of the Year Award of the Jewish Community Federation of N. California in 2000 while Head of School, Brandeis Hillel Day School SF and Marin (1992-2005). He was on the board of the California Association of Independent Schools for four years. Shreibman brings broad experience in K-8 independent school administration and education.
In March 2013, he was listed among “American’s Most Inspiring Rabbis” by the Jewish Daily Forward.
In 2013 Shreibman was appointed at DU the Director of Torch Leadership programs and Retention Services – teaching leadership and assisting students of diverse backgrounds to become campus leaders and successes during their college years and after. The program has grown from 12 to over 80 students in the 2016 Summer Leadership Intensive.
He brings wisdom, humor and passion to his work. His enthusiasm for his chosen academic pursuits, rabbinic work and student-centered approach is contagious.
