An interview with Super Sunday enthusiast Bob Tandler.

Bob, why is Super Sunday important to you?

Super Sunday 2.0 is about bringing members of our community together in order to increase the number of people we can help locally, in Israel and around the world. It also makes it possible for members of our Jewish community to help others have an impact and feel good about doing it. And finally, it facilitates a process which gives people an opportunity to turn their values into actions that – ultimately --will change lives. This is what Super Sunday 2.0 is all about. Federation is an organization which continues to be value-based. As Jews we take responsibility for each other according to the principles of chesed (caring and compassion), Torah (Jewish learning), tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzedakah (putting social justice into the world). Super Sunday is but one way we bring our community together to continue to lead and mobilize financial and social resources through philanthropic endeavors, strategic initiatives, partnering with agencies and synagogues to strengthen the Jewish people. Don’t forget that the work we are all engaged in is sacred work. We are helping our community members turn their values into actions that will change lives. And we are doing this on Super Sunday! An organized Jewish community is a more secure and more vital one, caring for the vulnerable and supporting programs that enrich individual lives, whether it’s getting a good job through training, providing food, access to education, transportation for elderly, being inclusive to children with learning disabilities, or funding community centers for the entire community.

How were you personally touched by past Super Sundays you’ve been a part of?

I’ve witnessed the vibrant image of 3+ generations of Bay Area Jews joining together to share the blessings of this community with others. And I coached Mayor Willie Brown through a solicitation call where he got a $10,000 increase from the donor.

What makes this year’s Super Sunday different? We’re using cell phones rather than landlines. In addition to the fundraising focus, we will be able to answer questions about our Federation in our local and global community and in Israel. .
