Inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s legendary short story, and recently adapted for the Jewish narrative by celebrities such as Larry David, Jonathan Safran Foer and Henry Winkler, SMITH Magazine founder Larry Smith will share how this short form has become a powerful tool to catalyze conversation and spark imagination. Our illustrious panelists – Craig Newmark, the creator of craigslist, filmmaker Jacob Korbluth, and Laura Scher, of Working Assets/CREDO – will inspire you to write and record your own six-word memoirs at this event. Dr. Albright was named the 64th Secretary of State of the United States in 1997, and became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. She is a professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. Dr. Albright chairs the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. She is also the president of the Truman Scholarship Foundation and a member of an advisory body, the U.S. Defense Department’s Defense Policy Board. In 2012, she was chosen by President Obama to receive the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of her contributions to international peace and democracy. Joshua S. Rubenstein is national head of the firm’s Trusts and Estates practice, and a member of the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Compensation Committee, and Diversity Committee.
Larry Smith
Described by Oprah magazine as on “a quest to spark the creativity of aspiring writers,” SMITH founder Larry Smith has spoken on storytelling and led workshops at companies such as Levi’s, ESPN, Twitter, Dell, Morgan Stanley, Google, and Shutterfly; at conferences, including PopTech and SXSW Interactive; and, at foundations, nonprofits, and schools around the world. Smith has edited eight books of Six-Word Memoirs, as well as an anthology, The Moment: Wild, Poignant, Life-Changing Stories from 125 Writers and Artists Famous & Obscure (Harper Perennial). Smith has written for The New York Times, the LA Times, Salon, Slate, Wired, Popular Science, ESPN The Magazine, and elsewhere. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Piper Kerman, and their son.
Craig Newmark
Craig Newmark is the founder of craigslist, which he started in 1995. He is also a self-described nerd, Web pioneer, speaker, philanthropist, and advocate of the use of technology for the public good. In September 2013 he was named “Nerd-in-Residence” by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Center for Innovation in recognition of his volunteer work with the department to enhance services to veterans. Craig also serves on the board of directors of the Poynter Institute Foundation, Center for Public Integrity, Sunlight Foundation, Consumers Union/Consumer Reports, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and on the Board of Overseers of the Columbia Journalism Review. In addition, he serves as an advisor to nearly 20 other renowned nonprofit organizations. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Craig received his bachelor and master’s degrees in computer science from Case Western University. He lives in San Francisco.
Jacob Kornbluth
Jacob Kornbluth is an award-winning writer and director of feature films, TV, and theater. He has had three feature films premiere at the Sundance Film Festival – Haiku Tunnel, the Best Thief in the World, and Inequality for All – the last of which won the special jury prize for excellence in filmmaking at Sundance 2013 and has been widely lauded as an important issue documentary. In 2014, Kornbluth won an Emmy for his work on “Years of Living Dangerously,” a Showtime series about climate change executive produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jerry Weintraub. Jacob started his career as a writer and director in the theater, directing three successful solo shows in San Francisco – the Moisture Seekers, Pumping Copy, and the Face by the Door – all well-received and nominated for awards.
Laura Scher
Laura is cofounder, former CEO and current executive chair of Working Assets/CREDO. She teaches "Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship" at Stanford University and has coauthored chapters in several inspirational books, including The Business of Changing the World, edited by Marc Benioff, and Hands On! 33 More Things Every Girl Should Know, edited by Suzanne Harper. Laura serves on the board of directors of Salesforce.com Foundation and eScrip; and, she is a former board member of the Yale School of Management and the Rosenberg Foundation. She has a BA in economics from Yale University, studied at the Institute for International Studies in Geneva, and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Nancy and Stephen Grand
Exemplary humanitarians and true leaders, Nancy and Stephen Grand are renowned philanthropists throughout the United States and Israel. After relocating to San Francisco from Detroit, Nancy Grand became involved with and joined the leadership of the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund. She has served as president of the Federation’s Board of Trustees and Endowment Committee, Campaign vice-chair and co-chair, and as a mentor in the Women in Leadership program. In the broader Bay Area, she serves on the executive committees of the San Francisco’s JCC, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, and on the board and executive committee of Family House. Nancy has taught mathematics, designed and implemented computer software, and instructed the Dale Carnegie Course in public speaking and human relations.

Stephen Grand is the co-founder of Grand/Sakwa Properties, one of the largest developers of residential and retail properties in the Midwest. He has been involved in the development of millions of square feet of residential and commercial properties. Before he embarked on his real estate development career, Stephen was president and owner of Deco-Grand, a large manufacturer of precision components and assemblies for diesel engines and automotive industries that he owned and operated for 20 years after succeeding his father, the late Sam Grand, a great supporter of Israel.

David Saxe
Dave received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Northwestern University and a Masters of Business Administration Degree from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Dave is a Managing Principal and co-founder of Calvera Partners, a real estate investment and advisory firm. Before founding Calvera, Dave worked as an Associate V.P., Investments for CIM Group in L.A. He was also a Senior market Research Analyst with Equity Office Properties Trust.
