The COVID-19 Emergency in India: Resources for Giving
As the COVID-19 crisis in India continues to grow at an alarming rate, many in our community are looking for ways to help. As of May 5, 2021, India has more than 20 million coronavirus infections and nearly 3.5 million people being treated actively for COVID-19. Hospitals are overrun and there are critical shortages of oxygen, ventilators, and other lifesaving medical supplies.
The international Jewish community is responding to this crisis. Below are three trusted partners and frequent grantees of our fundholders that have quickly ramped up to provide aid to India.
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)
JDC has been working in India since 1950 and has been responding to pandemic-related needs there for the last year. In coordination with the Indian Jewish community and its local partner SEWA Cooperative Federation, JDC is responding to the recent surge of coronavirus cases in India.
JDC is helping by:
- deploying ventilators to hospitals in Mumbai and Ahmedabad
- raising additional funds to provide oxygen, filtered masks, and other medical supplies
- providing telemedicine support for ICU doctors and nurses to consult with their peers in the United States and Israel

American Jewish World Service (AJWS)
AJWS is helping by:
- rushing masks and other vital personal protective equipment to vulnerable communities
- educating people how to protect themselves
- ensuring families have the food they need to survive quarantine
- providing emergency mental health support to help people cope with trauma and loss

IsraAID: Emergency COVID-19 Response in India
IsraAID is working with the district council and local partner organization Gabriel Project Mumbai in Palghar, a rural area north of Mumbai, to support 20 government-run hospitals serving a population of over 4 million people.
IsraAID is helping by:
- dispatching medical equipment and supplies, including crucial oxygen concentrators, to Indian healthcare facilities and organizations
- exploring technological solutions to meet gaps in COVID-19 response and care, including data management, logistical support, vaccinations, and more
- responding to the devastating secondary effects of the pandemic, including a growing mental health crisis, by launching self-care programs for frontline health workers to build community resilience and “help the helpers”
