Federation Advocacy in Action: Key Wins for the Jewish Community

Your advocacy, along with that of the Federation and the Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC), has led to remarkable legislative victories for the Jewish community across our state. Recently, Governor Newsom signed three of our top-priority bills into law — two protecting against campus antisemitism, and one mandating Holocaust and genocide education. Here are the details of these crucial bills:

  • AB 2925 (by Assemblymembers Laura Friedman and Josh Lowenthal) requires the top 5 most targeted groups – which consistently includes the Jewish community – to be incorporated in higher education anti-discrimination and DEI trainings.

  • SB 1287 (by Senator Steve Glazer) is a critical tool to ensuring Jewish students are safe from violence, intimidation, and harassment on California college campuses by requiring campuses to develop a code of conduct to respond to such incidents.

  • SB 1277 (by Senator Henry Stern) makes the California Teachers Collaborative on Holocaust and Genocide Education an official state program, creating curriculum and training materials for K-12 teachers to effectively teach about the Holocaust and other genocides.

These laws will have an important impact in our efforts to counter antisemitism and hate, and to create a safer educational environment for all students.

Thank you for being such a big part of our success. By signing our action alerts, making calls, and joining us in Sacramento to lobby on behalf of these bills, you have advanced our mission to get these bills across the finish line despite fierce opposition.

This advocacy is just one way that the Federation is working to combat antisemitism and strengthen our Jewish community, alongside, grant making, relationship building, and direct programs and services. Together, we have made significant strides, and with your continued support, the Federation will keep fighting for policies that protect and uplift our community.
