Repairing the World, One Hygiene Kit at a Time
I hope I can speak for everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish community when I say that we all feel the desire do good in the world. Finding meaningful volunteer opportunities is challenging! Many of us are eager to get our hands dirty and help, but finding the venue, the cause and the right project isn't easy.
On Sunday, June 4, nearly 200 volunteers had the chance to do just that by assembling hygiene kits to be sent to refugees and victims of disasters around the world. The Federation, the American Jewish Join Distribution Committee (JDC), and Heart to Heart International all coming together to create the event was an ideal partnership to provide this rare volunteer opportunity. In just a few hours we put together 900 kits that will directly affect someone’s life and show that we are there for them as a community.
Our community strengthens and expands in dynamic ways because of events that bring people of all ages together for a meaningful experience of tikkun olam. Not just talking about it, but using our minds, bodies, and hearts to touch others who are less fortunate is a true expression of our Jewish values in action. The whole experience felt like a real mitzvah!
