Giving Single-Parent Families a Break this Summer

There are lots of things to love about summer: Warmer temperatures, beach days, and barbecues. But, outside of vacations and long weekends, summer can also become a hectic and expensive time for parents – especially for single moms and dads.

“I'm the only enforcer when it comes to discipline. I'm the one missing work when they're sick, managing the household, helping them with homework, driving them to their activities, attending all their games and performances, and comforting them through all of life's challenges. That's because I'm the only one on duty, 24/7. That's what single parenting is.”

For many facing these complex daily pressures, accessing Jewish life can come at a cost that isn’t only financial – it can be emotionally and physically draining.

Couple these realities with the staggering cost of living in the Bay Area and it becomes clear why families may opt out of considering Jewish camp.

Recognizing the unique summer child care challenges, a generous local donor has taken action, helping to make Jewish camp options within reach by making a multi-year commitment to ensure single-parent family scholarships are available through the Federation. "I sponsored this grant because I understand the unique challenges of single-parenting and the benefit of developing a supportive community. I hope the scholarships to family camp can help build that network, and that the scholarships to overnight camp can give single parents the respite they need!”

Camp is a transformative experience in the life of a child, and for the whole family.

The impact Jewish camp has on a kid is both immediate and lasting. No matter your background, there’s a camp where your child will have fun, feel comfortable, explore their Jewish identity, and learn more about themselves. Our local camps want to welcome all families who seek an immersive Jewish camp experience. "Jewish summer camp provides an important and powerful opportunity for young people to develop their sense of connection, resilience, and self-confidence, all within a joyful and nurturing Jewish community. The new single-parent family grant is a significant piece of the puzzle toward making camp accessible for all Bay Area Jewish children,” stated Casey Yurow, Director of Eden Village West.
